Frequently Asked Questions
Preservation Process
What is floral preservation?
Floral preservation is the art of carefully drying and pressing flowers to retain their beauty and emotional significance for years to come. At Once Upon a Bouquet, we transform your meaningful blooms—whether from weddings, memorials, anniversaries, birthdays, or special gifts—into elegant, heirloom-quality framed artwork. Each piece is designed to preserve not just the flowers, but the memories they represent.
How Does it Work?
We offer a meticulous and artistic floral preservation process. Here’s how it works:
1. Place Your Order: Choose your frame size, color, and any desired customizations.
2. Ship Your Bouquet: Send us your flowers following our detailed shipping instructions.
3. Arrival Confirmation: Within 48 hours of receiving your flowers, we’ll email you a photo so you can see the condition of the flowers upon arrival.
4. Preservation Process: Your flowers will be carefully preserved using techniques specific to each type of flower.
5. Artful Arrangement: Once dried, we’ll arrange your flowers according to your selected design, incorporating any customizations you requested.
6. Design Approval: You’ll receive an email with a photo of the mockup design for your approval or adjustments.
7. Final Touches & Quality Check: After your approval, we conduct multiple quality checks to guarantee it meets our standards.
8. Secure Delivery: Your frame is securely packaged and shipped with signature confirmation upon delivery.
Can I still preserve my bouquet if it is already dried?
No, dried flowers cannot be pressed. However, we offer a bouquet recreation service. We can recreate your original arrangement using fresh flowers from our local florist and preserve them instead.
Which flowers press poorly and which flowers press well?
The following flowers press beautifully:
- Roses, peonies, gerber daisies, larkspur, ferns and greenery, hydrangeas, anemone, ranunculus, orchids, and delphinium.
Flowers that do not press as well include:
- Succulent, chrysanthemum (mums), and white lilies (tend to brown and lose color).
If you’re unsure about a specific flower in your bouquet, feel free to contact us for guidance.
What is the difference between pressed and dried flowers?
Pressed flowers are flattened for a 2D design that is ideal for framing. Dried flowers retain their 3D shape and are typically used in shadow boxes or dried bouquets.
Do you offer shadow boxes or 3D floral arrangements?
We currently specialize in pressed floral preservation and do not offer 3D arrangements or shadow boxes.
I am worried that my flowers will change color
It’s completely natural for flowers to shift in color during the pressing process—this is part of what makes each piece truly unique. Some blooms may deepen, soften, or take on antique tones over time, reflecting the delicate and organic nature of preserved florals.
At Once Upon a Bouquet, we specialize in advanced preservation techniques to give each flower the care it needs to maximize its natural beauty. We can color-correct certain blooms—particularly whites and blush pinks—to preserve their original tones as faithfully as possible, while still honoring the timeless charm that comes with natural transformation.
Please note: all the flowers shown on our website have not undergone color correction. Most flowers do not require any adjustments, as their naturally shifted hues remain beautiful in their preserved form. However, if you'd like your white or pale pink blooms to be color-corrected, please follow this Link.
Will my flowers fade over time?
Once your framed flowers arrive, gently take them out of the box and place them in a well-ventilated, dry space—away from direct sunlight. Just like fine fabrics, wood, and artwork, botanical materials are sensitive to light. Over time, prolonged exposure can cause fading or discoloration, even in the most carefully preserved pieces.
That’s why we use UV-protective glass and professionally seal every frame—to guard against time and light, and to preserve your bouquet’s beauty for as long as possible. While all organic materials may change subtly with age, our expert techniques ensure your flowers retain their elegance and charm for many years to come.
By choosing professional preservation, you're not only saving a fleeting bloom—you're capturing a moment, a memory, a piece of your love story. With proper care, your framed bouquet will remain a timeless heirloom, admired and treasured for generations.
At Once Upon a Bouquet, we believe that the natural beauty of pressed flowers isn’t just preserved—it’s eternal.

How do I care for the blooms before shipping?
To keep your flowers fresh before shipping:
- Trim the Stems: Cut the ends (at an angle if possible).
- Hydrate: Place the arrangement in a vase with cool water, away from direct sunlight.
- Avoid Refrigeration: Do not store flowers in the fridge, as fluctuating temperatures can cause moisture damage or wilting.
How soon should I book?
We recommend booking as early as possible, as we only accept a limited number of bouquets per week to ensure each order receives personalized attention.
- Tip: Since brides often leave for their honeymoon after the wedding, we suggest assigning a trusted friend or family member to handle shipping your flowers.
- Plan ahead: Wedding season is busy, so early planning helps guarantee your spot.
Do you accept international orders?
We currently only accept orders from within the United States. Due to shipping delays and customs regulations, we are unable to guarantee the freshness of flowers shipped internationally.
What if my flowers arrive to Once Upon a Bouquet’ studio wilted or damaged?
If your flowers arrive wilted or damaged due to shipping:
- We will notify you immediately and send a photo of their condition.
- You will have the option to purchase replacement flowers from our local florist.
Can I replace my flowers if they are damaged in shipment?
You can wait until we receive your flowers, then we will send you a picture of their state upon arrival. If is necessary, we will give you the option to replace your flowers with our local florist for an extra cost. We will request the recreation of your bouquet and send you the quote.
What if I am local, can I drop off?
We LOVE drop-offs because the flowers are always at their freshest!. We recommend leaving your flowers as you save the time of delivery and avoid risk for the flowers during transit. Our studio is located in Reston, Virginia.
You can drop off your bouquet Monday through Saturday from 7 AM to 7 PM. Please have your order placed online beforehand, and bring a printed copy of your order info on a slip of paper. Use this LINK to print and complete your drop-off form.
Email us in advance at info@onceuponabouquet.art to let us know when you’ll be coming and we’ll provide detailed instructions, including where to park and where to leave your bouquet for a smooth delivery experience.
How soon do I need to ship the blooms?
To ensure your flowers arrive fresh and in good condition, we recommend using express or overnight shipping through FedEx or UPS. Do not use USPS because they take longer. The sooner your flowers arrive to our studio, the better! The flowers should arrive within 3 days of your event date.
Do we need to dismember the blooms and pick off the petals before shipping?
We recommend keeping all your flowers intact inside of the arrangement or bouquet and do not dismember any blooms of petals.
How do I keep my flowers as fresh as possible?
Keep your flowers in water throughout the day as much as you can! Make sure to keep them out of direct sunlight and heat. Also avoid extreme cold as the water in the flowers can freeze and cause them to wilt! (Their favorite temperature is 35 degrees F).
We also suggest purchasing a throw bouquet and not throwing your real bouquet to help keep the fragile blooms safe!
What does “signature required” means?
All of our frames require a signature upon delivery, which means the package will not be left at your doorstep unless it’s signed for by the recipient. We include this on all custom orders to ensure they aren’t stolen or delivered to the wrong address. If you'd prefer to waive this option, please contact us at info@onceuponabouquet.art before your approval of your final design.
Can I change my shipping address if I need to?
You can change your shipping address before approval of your final design. If you would like to change your shipping address, send a message to info@onceuponabouquet.art.
Once your final design has been approved your frame is prepared to be delivered.

- You shipped your bouquet to us and want to replace some flowers because they did not arrive in good condition and are not optimal to press.
How does flower recreation work?
Please send us an email with your bouquet picture to info@onceuponabouquet.art so we give you the price of your bouquet replica from our local florist. Bouquet recreation allows us to repurchase flowers from local florists & press them fresh in the shop! Please note that in rare cases we may not be able to obtain flowers to recreate the original bouquet such as when a flower is out of season.
After we give you the price quote, you can go online to book the frame size that you want, customize it and then buy the “flower recreation” package that is appropriate for you. You can add to your cart the flower recreation through this link. Do not forget to choose your frame size and customize it in the same order!
After you receive your order number, send us a picture of your bouquet with the order number so we can buy your flowers and to preserve them!
What if we are not sure what frame color and backing we want yet?

When will I receive updates on my preservation?
You will get an email within the 48hours that we receive your bouquet. You will receive an email for your design approval. If you have any questions during the process we are happy to answer your questions!
I didn’t think of preserving my bouquet until after my event, is there anything you can do?
Although we recommend reserving your spot before your special day, we understand that the desire to preserve your bouquet sometimes blooms a little later. If your decision to save your flowers is a last-minute one, don’t worry—we may still be able to help create your forever keepsake.
Simply send us a photo of your bouquet, and our team will assess whether your flowers are still fresh enough for pressing. If they are, we’ll guide you through overnight shipping to ensure they arrive in the best possible condition.
If some of your blooms arrive too late and are no longer in optimal condition for pressing, we offer thoughtful repurchasing options to restore the magic of your bouquet. Once your flowers arrive, we will contact you and—if needed—replace those blooms for an additional cost.
Our mission is to capture your love story in all its floral glory, even if a few petals need to be rewritten.
We also offer flower recreation services for an even more personalized result. Please follow this Link.
What should I do if my event was more than 48 hours ago?
Don't worry, you still have options!
Option 1 - Still Ship Them to Us:
If it's been more than 48 hours, you can still ship them to us. If they look like they are in good condition, there is a chance they could make it without any issues but this is also a chance they could arrive dead or develop mold during the shipping journey.
You are always welcome to send us a picture of your flowers and ask our opinion! Just keep in mind we sometimes get a lot of messages, but we will respond to you as soon as we can!
If you do choose to ship them to us, we always do our best to work with them and will let you know how many we think will make it through the pressing process!
So, you are still welcome to ship to us after 48 hours but we just want to make sure you are aware of the risks that come with this!
Option 2 - Repurchasing:
A great alternative to shipping your bouquet to us is sending us a picture of the bouquet so we can repurchase your flowers from our local florist and recreate your arrangement using the same flower varieties that were in your original arrangement.
While this option may not be as sentimental as knowing they are your actual flowers from your actual event, it may be the best option after 48 hours and can sometimes be cheaper than shipping your flowers to us!
It will also ensure your final product is as vibrant and colorful as possible because the flowers would be fresher than they would be if you ship them to us!

Once we have reviewed the details, we will confirm whether your request can be seamlessly integrated into the final design.
Are there any payment plan options?
Yes! We offer payment plans that are interest free.
